Learn how to make rainbow cupcakes in just a few simple steps! You can turn almost any plain cupcake recipe into a colourful delight with this easy peasy guide. You can stick with a tried and tested recipe for your favourite vanilla cupcakes, or you can even use a shop-bought box mix if you're pinched for time.
What you'll need...
• Plain cupcake recipe or boxed mix
• Rainbow food colourings (try red, orange, yellow, blue, green and purple)
• Cupcake tin

Follow the method of your favourite plain cupcake recipe or boxed mix to prepare the mixture in its entirety. You can use almost any recipe that you like for plain sponge cupcakes or vanilla cupcakes. Here are a few options:

Add colours

Once your cupcake mixture is ready, divide it between six bowls. Add food colouring to each bowl, creating six different colours. Start with a little food colouring in each bowl; you can always add more. Stir well so that the colouring is evenly distributed throughout each mixture.
Create layers

Using about 1 tablespoon of cake mixture, start with one colour and spoon into the bottom of each paper cupcake case or silicone mould. Using the back of a spoon, gently spread the cake mixture out to the edges so that it creates an even layer. Repeat with the remaining colours.

Bake the cupcakes according to the oven temperature and baking time stated in the original recipe. The fact that you've added food colouring doesn't change anything! When a skewer inserted into the middle of a cupcake comes out clean, your cakes are ready.
Cool and decorate

Let the cupcakes cool completely on a wire rack. You can then enjoy them plain, or decorate with icing. A nice white icing or buttercream looks especially nice on rainbow cupcakes, creating a cloud-like effect! For icing inspiration, check out these recipes:
