    About this recipe: A traditional Lebanese dessert. This recipe omits the traditional addition of rose water and orange blossom essense, but it doesn't take away any of the deliciousness.

    Makes: 1 23cm round cake

    • 250g fine semolina
    • 60g plain flour
    • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
    • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
    • 225g caster sugar
    • 250ml milk
    • 125ml vegetable oil
    • 1 tablespoon pine nuts

    1. Preheat oven to 180 C / Gas 4. Grease a 23cm round baking tin.
    2. In a small bowl, mix semolina, flour, turmeric and baking powder. Set aside.
    3. In a large bowl, stir milk and sugar until sugar is dissolved. Add flour mixture and oil and beat with an electric beater at medium speed for 5 minutes. This step is essential, do not use any shortcuts.
    4. Pour into a prepared 23cm round tin. Sprinkle top with pine nuts. Bake at 180 C / Gas 4 for 25 to 35 minutes or until cocktail stick inserted in centre comes out dry.

    Simple and tasty! I added a little rose water but didn't have any pine nuts. Still made an amazingly light and spongy cake! I may add some ground cloves next time too. - 01 Oct 2012


    Made this today as my partner has a thing about all things with Turmeric! I used coconut milk instead of cows milk and topped with chopped almonds and chopped Dates. Tasted wonderful with a lovely texture. Really easy recipe. ⭐️ - 03 Apr 2016
