About this recipe: I have been making this for my children for over 20 years and now got my grandson eating it too. Many friends and the children love this and the sausage casserole recipe and it has gone to many families.

    Surrey, England, UK

    Ingredients
    Serves: 6

    • 6 to 8 potatoes, mashed
    • 12 thick sausages
    • 6 slices bacon
    • 1 onion, chopped (optional)
    • 1 small pack mushrooms, quartered (optional)
    • 2 or 3 (400g) tins baked beans
    • 1 (400g) tin chopped tomatoes
    • 200g cheese, grated

    Method
    Prep:30min  ›  Cook:30min  ›  Ready in:1hr

    1. Preheat the oven to 200 C / Gas 6.
    2. Peel potatoes, boil or steam and make into mashed potato. I like to add some butter and milk to mine to make them creamy.
    3. While potatoes are cooking. Grill sausages and bacon until cooked. Once cooked, cut sausages into 3 pieces and bacon into small pieces. Fry onions and mushrooms until cooked, if using them.
    4. In a large casserole dish mix baked beans and tomatoes. Add sausages, bacon, onion and mushrooms, stir together. Top with mashed potato and sprinkle with grated cheese.
    5. Place in oven for 30 to 40 minutes, until cheese has melted. Place a tray under casserole dish as bean juice may bubble over sides.

Lovely recipe. Easy to do, but I would recommend leaving out the mushrooms & onions if cooking for kid's. Hubby loved ot though. - 11 Oct 2010

The ingredients are simple basic larder items and it makes a cheap meal ... however the end result was disappointingly tastleless even though I added a dash of worcester sauce to the concoction and used tasty pork and leek sausages. The consistency of the finished product was, in my opinion, too sloppy and could have been improved with perhaps adding some cornflour or tomato puree for a thicker sauce. Would not make this again, Sorry. - 30 Oct 2011

Was tasty and everyone liked it. Only used 2 cans of beans and didn't use all the cheese as was alot. I'd like to add a chilli to zing it up but not sure my kids would agree lol - 07 Mar 2012
