About this recipe: An easy, aromatic cherry chutney recipe, spiced with cinnamon and clove. Tastes great with hot or cold roasted meats, with a piece of cheese or simply on its own with crackers.


Serves: 16 

  • 325g fresh sweet cherries
  • 1 apple - peeled, cored and grated
  • 70ml cider vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 100g sugar

Prep:10min  ›  Cook:45min  ›  Ready in:55min 

  1. Place all ingredients in a small pot and bring to the boil. Simmer uncovered for 45 minutes over medium heat, stirring often.
  2. Pour hot chutney into a sterilised jar and screw lid on tightly. Cool at room temperature and then store in the fridge

We live in southern Spain and went to the cherry festival at Alfarnate. We came away with 3kgs of plump juicy cherries. I didn't want to make jam as we eat more savoury foods. I tripled the recipe, used wine vinegar and added tspn of dried ginger and same amount of cumin. Having searched several recipes for a chutney and, as some had sultanas added, I added a good handful of dried sultanas. Lovely result, will definitely make this again. A great and really easy recipe. I also increased the quantities and made this with a glut of strawberries using raspberry vinegar, lemon peel and juice (1 large lemon) and pink and black peppercorns. Make sure the vinegar is 6% or more acidity for good keeping. - 19 Aug 2012
