About this recipe: A delicious and hearty dish that's perfect for the cold winter nights. Beans are slowly baked in a well-seasoned tomato sauce. Enjoy as a main course or a side dish.


Serves: 10 

  • 500g dried haricot beans, soaked in water overnight and drained
  • 1 (400g) tin chopped tomatoes
  • 3 rashers bacon, finely sliced
  • 3 tablespoons black treacle
  • 3 tablespoons dark brown soft sugar
  • 1 teaspoon mustard powder
  • 750ml water
  • 1 tablespoon sea salt
  • freshly cracked black pepper to taste

  1. Preheat oven to 180 C / Gas 4
  2. Combine tomatoes, treacle, dark brown soft sugar, mustard powder, water, salt and pepper in a medium saucepan.
  3. Bring to the boil and stir until the sugar has dissolved. Remove from the heat and set aside.
  4. Place bacon and drained beans into a large casserole dish. Stir in the tomato mixture and cover.
  5. Bake in preheated oven for 6 hours. Check every hour to ensure the dish doesn't dry up. Add more water if necessary.
