About this recipe: This chocolate sponge cake can be thrown together pretty fast. Serve dusted with icing sugar, drizzled with melted chocolate or frosted with chocolate ganache.


Serves: 10 

  • 200g caster sugar
  • 125g self-raising flour
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 125ml milk
  • 75g butter, melted

Prep:15min  ›  Cook:45min  ›  Ready in:1hr 

  1. Preheat oven to 180 C / Gas 4. Grease a cake tin.
  2. Put all dry ingredients in a bowl and mix well.
  3. Add eggs, vanilla extract and milk, mix well. Add melted butter and stir for a few minutes.
  4. Pour batter into cake tin. Bake in preheated oven for about 45 minutes. The cake is done when a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean.

This cake is so easy to make and turns out lovely. I put some choc fudge icing and hundreds and thousands on the top and it went down very well. This will definitely be a family favourite!!!!!. Thank you - 03 Aug 2012
