Spicy Meatballs with Pasta

About this recipe: This is a twist on the classic meatball and spaghetti dish. Sweet and spicy beef meatballs are tossed in a rich tomato sauce with pasta. Serve with grated cheese or garlic bread, if desired


Serves: 8 

  • For the Meatballs
  • 500g extra-lean minced beef
  • 55g breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon Italian herb mix
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons sweet chilli sauce
  • 75g tomato ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons BBQ sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed chillies or chilli powder
  • 1 pinch salt and pepper
  • 1 (500g) packet pasta
  • For the Sauce
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped garlic
  • 2 (500g) jars tomato pasta sauce with garlic, such as Dolmio's
  • 1 (400g) tin chopped tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon Italian herb mix
  • 125ml dry sherry
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • oil for frying

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the minced beef, breadcrumbs, egg, 1 tablespoon Italian herbs, Worcestershire sauce, sweet chilli sauce, tomato ketchup, BBQ sauce, salt, pepper, soy sauce and crushed chillies.
  2. Roll the meat mixture into 2cm balls and place on a plate. Set aside.
  3. Heat some oil in a large frying pan until hot. Saute onion and garlic until fragrant. Meanwhile, bring a large pot of lightly salted water to the boil.
  4. Add pasta sauce, tinned tomatoes, salt, pepper, 1 tablespoon Italian herbs and sherry to the frying pan. Stir well and let simmer.
  5. Heat another frying pan with some oil. Fry the meatballs for about 5 minutes or until cooked through. Set aside.
  6. Add pasta to the lightly salted water, add a couple drop of oil and boil until al dente, around 10 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  7. Add the meatballs to the sauce and stir well. Add the meatballs and sauce to the pasta and mix well.
  8. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley to serve.
