About this recipe: A great alternative to the traditional apple pie. A sweet pastry case is filled with sweetened pears, then topped with a sweetened, buttery and cheesy crumble. The Cheddar in this recipe complements the sweetness of the pears extremely well.


Serves: 6 

  • Crumble
  • 60g plain flour
  • 110g dark brown soft sugar
  • 60g Cheddar cheese, grated
  • 50g unsalted butter
  • Filling
  • 1kg pears, peeled and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 110g dark brown soft sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cornflour
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 (23cm) unbaked sweet pastry case

  1. Preheat the oven to 200 C / Gas 6.
  2. Combine the flour, 110g dark brown soft sugar and Cheddar cheese. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Toss the sliced pears with the lemon juice. Combine the 110g dark brown soft sugar, cornflour and cinnamon in a separate bowl. Add the sugar mixture to the pears and toss to coat.
  4. Transfer the pears to the pastry case and top with the crumble mixture. Bake in the preheated oven until the top is golden brown, about 45 minutes.
