Rocket salad

    15 min

This is a traditional Middle Eastern salad. It's probably the simplest rocket salad you'll ever come across. Rocket is layered with onions, mushrooms and tomato, then drizzled with a lemon-oil dressing.

    4 people made this

    Serves: 4

    • 250g rocket
    • 2 onions, thinly sliced
    • 70g chopped mushrooms
    • 1 tomato, diced
    • 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
    • 1/2 lemon, juiced
    • 2 teaspoons sumac
    • salt to taste

    Prep:15min  ›  Ready in:15min

    1. Arrange rocket leaves on a large plate and layer with onions, mushrooms and tomato.
    2. Whisk together olive oil, lemon juice and sumac. Season to taste with salt and pour over the salad.

Sumac comes from dried berries that are grown in the Mediterranean. They taste sour and fruity. You can find them in Middle Eastern speciality stores or online.

I just bought this dish from my local supermarket in Qatar today. It was so delicious I had to find the recipe. It also goes by the name Jirjir as the translation is literal from Arabic  -  25 Nov 2007  (Review from Allrecipes US | Canada)

We thought this was OK. It wasn't bad; it just wasn't great. I used shallot instead of onion because I prefer the milder flavor; otherwise I followed the recipe exactly. It just seemed to be missing something. I think some fresh herbs, like parsley and mint, would have helped, and maybe some garlic. Thanks, anyway.  -  04 Nov 2009  (Review from Allrecipes US | Canada)
