Italian Meatballs in Tomato Sauce

About this recipe: This dish takes a little while to make, but the results are really worth it. Homemade pork and beef meatballs are simmered in a rich and delicious tomato sauce. Serve with pasta.

Serves: 20 

  • 4 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 2.5kg passata
  • 685g tomato puree
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil
  • 900g minced beef
  • 450g minced pork
  • 110g dry breadcrumbs
  • 80g grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon garlic granules
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley

  1. In a large pot mix together garlic, passata, tomato puree, parsley and basil. Bring sauce to the boil and then turn down the heat and simmer.
  2. In a large bowl mix together the minced beef, minced pork, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, garlic granules and parsley. Shape into balls the size of a child's fist. In a frying pan, fry meatballs in hot olive oil until brown. Add to sauce mixture. Simmer over low heat for four hours.
