About this recipe: This pumpkin bread is moist, fruity, nutty and delicious. A whole orange is pureed, then mixed with pumpkin, flour, sugar, walnuts, raisins, eggs and spices and baked to perfection. Serve for breakfast, brunch, lunch, dessert, afternoon tea or elevenses. It's also great popped into packed lunches and for picnics.


Makes: 1 loaf

  • 1 large orange
  • 75g unsalted butter, softened
  • 265g caster sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 250g pumpkin puree
  • 75ml water
  • 250g plain flour
  • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 60g chopped walnuts
  • 80g chopped raisins

  1. Preheat oven to 180 C / Gas 4. Grease a 23x13cm loaf tin.
  2. Cut orange into wedges and remove any seeds. Place orange, peel and all, in a food processor. Pulse until finely chopped; set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the pumpkin puree, water and the orange. Mix together flour, bicarbonate of soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon and cloves. Stir into batter just until moistened. Stir in nuts and raisins. Spoon into the prepared loaf tin.
  4. Bake for 1 hour in the preheated oven or until a skewer inserted near the centre comes out clean. Let stand 10 minutes, then remove from tin and cool on a wire rack.

Really yummy and the blitzed orange certainly adds a nice flavour and moistness to the bread. Made two smaller loaves (took about 45 minutes in the oven) and had planned to give one to a friend, but my six-year-old wants to eat it instead! Definitely a recipe to keep. - 30 Nov 2011


Beautiful recipe, my family loved it. It came out a more cake consistency, moist, orangey, nutty and so lovely. I did tweak it slightly by stewing the pumpkins and spices with lavender before combining the ingredients 😋 I will definitely make this again 👌🏾 - 08 Oct 2016
