    • 225g (8 oz) tempeh
    • vegetable oil for frying

    Prep:20min  ›  Cook:5min  ›  Ready in:25min

    1. Place the garlic in a small mixing bowl. Pour water and salt into the mixing bowl, mix well.
    2. Slice the tempeh 2cm (3/4 in) thick and score both sides of the tempeh. Marinate the tempeh in the garlic, water and salt mixture for 20 minutes.
    3. Pan fry the tempeh in a deep frying pan with oil until golden brown on both sides.

Tempeh, popular in Indonesia, is made from soybeans, much like tofu. It's taste and nutritional profile is quite different, however. It has a stronger flavour and more fibre and nutrients than tofu. It should be readily available in health food shops.

Something else. This was the first time I had tried/cooked tempeh, and this was a very pleasant surprise. This recipe is simple and delicious. I cut the tempeh into squares and fried them on all sides. We dipped them in soy sauce, ketchup and hp. Great recipe, thanks!  -  24 Jul 2008

Used different ingredients. Try adding some soy sauce to the marinade... yum!  -  24 Jul 2008
