Chinese Beef and Tomato Stir Fry

About this recipe: A delicious Chinese stir fry, made with beef with tomatoes. The succulent steak, go exceedingly well with the slightly sweet and tangy tomato sauce. Serve with freshly cooked rice.

Serves: 4 

  • Marinade
  • 1/2 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 tablespoon light soy sauce or 1 tablespoon dark soy sauce
  • 1-2 tablespoons cornflour, mixed with 1 tablespoon water
  • 450g beef steak, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 2 tablespoons chopped garlic
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 1 shallots, diced
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2-3 tomatoes, diced
  • Sauce
  • 2 tablespoons tomato ketchup
  • 4 tablespoons tomato puree
  • water, as needed
  • salt to taste
  • sugar to taste

  1. Make the marinade by mixing together the sugar, salt, soy sauce and cornflour slurry. Mix in the beef, allow to marinate for 15 minutes.
  2. Heat a large frying pan with 1 tablespoon oil. Stir-fry the garlic until aromatic, 2-3 minutes. Add the beef and stir-fry until 70% done, about 3-4 minutes, set aside.
  3. Heat the same frying pan with 1 tablespoon oil. Stir-fry the onion and shallots with 1/4 teaspoon salt until soft, 3-4 minutes. add the tomatoes, tomato ketchup, tomato puree and stir for 2-3 minutes. Adjust the seasoning accordingly.
  4. Bring the sauce to the boil. Add the beef, stir to combine and serve.
