The ultimate sandwich with loads of melted cheese. A croque monsieur makes for a fabulously quick and satisfying midweek supper when served with a simple green salad. This recipe is foolproof, so enjoy!

4 slices bread, toasted
4 slices Emmental cheese
2 slices cooked ham
4 tablespoons milk
50g grated Gruyère cheese

Spread butter on two slices of toast. Cut the cheese and the ham to the same size as the toast.
Place 1 slice of Emmental, 1 slice of ham and another slice of Emmental on each piece of toast. Place another slice of buttered toast on top of each.
Whisk the milk with the grated Gruyère and pour it onto a flat plate. Dip both sides of the sandwiches in the milk until it's all been soaked up. Press the cheese onto the toast.
Heat butter in a frying pan and fry the toasties until golden-brown on both side and the cheese is melted completely inside. Serve immediately.
