Strawberry Heart Cake

    A beautiful cake for Mother's Day or Valentine's Day, filled with a luscious cream and topped with strawberries. The amount is enough for a large heart shaped tin or a small heart shaped and a small loaf tin.

    Serves: 4 

    • For the cake
    • 3 eggs
    • 150g icing sugar
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 4 tablespoons oil
    • 4 tablespoons advocaat
    • 175g plain flour
    • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
    • butter and breadcrumbs for the tin
    • For the cream
    • 200g cream cheese
    • Juice of 1/2 lemon
    • 2 tablespoons advocaat
    • 400g cream, whipped
    • For the filling
    • 1-2 punnets strawberries (depending on the size of the tin)
    • 4-8 tablespoons strawberry jam
    • For decoration
    • Chocolate buttons

    1. Stir the eggs with the icing sugar and vanilla until foamy. Add the oil and advocaat and mix in the flour with the baking powder.
    2. Preheat the oven to 180 C / Gas 4. Grease a heart shaped tin with butter, sprinkle with breadcrumbs and pour in the cake mixture. Bake for approximately 35-45 minutes in the preheated oven.
    3. For the cream, stir the cream cheese, lemon juice and advocaat. Beat the cream to stiff peaks and mix into the cheese mixture.
    4. Leave the cake to cool, then cut through it horizontally and fill with the cream. Replace the top piece of cake, cover the sides with cream and decorate with chocolate drops.
    5. Decorate the top of the heart with strawberries. Heat the strawberry jam (in the microwave is fine) till it is slightly running. Pour over the strawberries and cool before serving.


    Advocaat is a traditional liqueur from Holland made from egg yolks, brandy, sugar and vanilla. Warninks Advocaat is a popular brand. If you cannot find advocaat, use brandy instead.
