Stir-Fried Beef and Celery

    This Chinese stir fry dish is delicious, it's also quick and easy to make. Succulent and tender sirloin steak is stir-fried with celery to perfection. Enjoy with freshly cooked rice.

    Makes: 2 - 3 servings

    • 400g beef sirloin steak, finely sliced
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1 tablespoon light soy sauce
    • 1 teaspoon sugar
    • 1 tablespoon rice wine
    • 1/4 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
    • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
    • 2 teaspoons cornflour
    • 200g Chinese celery, leaves discarded and cut into 4cm lengths
    • 2 1/2 tablespoons vegetable oil

    1. Marinate the beef in salt, light soy sauce, sugar, rice wine, bicarbonate of soda, oil and cornflour in a bowl; mix well.
    2. Heat 1/2 tablespoon oil in a wok over medium heat until hot. Stir-fry the celery for 2 minutes, remove and set aside.
    3. Add the remaining oil into the wok and heat until very hot. Stir-fry the beef until almost cooked through. Stir in the celery and toss well. Serve.


    Chinese celery and rice wine can be purchased in Chinese speciality shops. Alternatively, ordinary celery can be substituted in for Chinese celery.
