Cheese and Ham Scone Whirls

    30 min

These are a tasty tea time snack. It's a very old recipie from my Grandmothers kitchen and a staple item on her cake stand for decades. A fairly easy item to make and you can use any strength of cheese that takes your fancy but I do recommend a good strong Cheddar.

Makes: 6 depending how thick you cut them

    • 125g (8 oz) self-raising flour
    • 60g (2 oz) butter
    • 90g (3 oz) Cheddar cheese, grated
    • 60g (2 oz) lean ham, chopped
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1 egg, beaten
    • 5 tablespoons milk

    1. Preheat the oven to 220 C (425-450 F) Gas Mark 7, and grease a large baking tray.
    2. Sift together flour and salt. Rub in butter to the flour then mix to a soft but not sticky dough with egg and milk. Be carefull here you might not need all the milk
    3. Turn out the dough onto a floured board. Knead the dough lightly until smooth then roll it into a rectangle around 6 x 8 inches.
    4. Brush the dough with milk but leave 1/2 an inch from the edge. Sprinkle the cheese and ham over the dough (still keeping it from the edge).
    5. Carefully roll up the dough like a swiss roll from the long side.
    6. Cut the roll into 1/2 inch slices and place on a greased baking tray. Bake in a hot oven for 10-15 minutes

    Make it healthier

If your ham is salty omit the salt. Or you can omit the ham and just have cheese if you dont like/want ham.
