Wogger's Cottage Pie

    A rich, well flavoured cottage pie. Essentially suit the flavours to match your taste. Can be prepared couple of days in advance to let flavours develop, meat mix can be frozen, defrost and add potato topping before cooking.

    Serves: 3 

    • 2 tablespoons olive oil
    • 2 cloves garlic, chopped (or garlic granules to taste)
    • 2 red onions, finely sliced
    • 500g lean minced steak
    • 2 beef stock cubes
    • 1 bouquet garni or 1 tsp mixed herbs
    • splash Worcester sauce
    • 2 tablespoons tomato ketchup
    • 300ml water
    • 4 potatoes, peeled
    • 110g (4 oz) mature cheese

    1. Heat oilve oil in a frying pan. Add onion and garlic, and cook till soft. Remove from pan and set aside.
    2. To same pan, add mince and brown to break up, then add stock cubes.
    3. Add bouquet garni /mixed herbs, Worcester sauce, ketchup, then gradually add water to make a wet mixure, adding more if necessary. Bring to boil then simmer for 30 minutes. Once cooked either dish into individual pie dishes or a large casserole dish.
    4. Preheat the oven to 200 C / Gas 6.
    5. Cook potatoes and mash with a little butter/milk.
    6. Top mince mixure with potato mixture, then top with grated cheese.
    7. Cook in hot oven for approximately 30 minutes until bubbling.
    8. No need for seperate gravy as this is so rich and yummy.


    Can be served with side dish of peas, or they can be added to mince mixture.
