Cook the macaroni according to packet directions. Drain.
In a saucepan, melt 30g of butter or margarine over medium heat. Add onion and garlic, and sauté until onions have a rich golden colour. Mix in the tomatoes, salt and pepper and Italian seasoning. Stir in milk and 180g of grated cheese. Let sauce simmer gently until the cheese is melted, stirring often. Mix in the cooked macaroni.
Transfer macaroni and cheese to an ovenproof dish (preferably greased). Sprinkle with breadcrumbs and 60g of cheese. Dice remaining 30g butter or margarine, and spread evenly over the top.
