Turkey mince pasta

    This is a lighter version of a beef pasta dish, like spaghetti bolognese. Turkey mince is simmered in a tomato sauce and served with farfalle pasta. Feel free to use spaghetti, if you wish. Enjoy with liberal sprinklings of Parmesan cheese.

    Serves: 8 

    • 450g lean minced turkey
    • 1 (400g) tin chopped tomatoes
    • 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
    • 250g tomato pasta sauce
    • 2 teaspoons caster sugar, or to taste
    • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
    • 450g farfalle pasta

    1. In a large frying pan over medium heat, cook the turkey until browned.
    2. Stir in the tomatoes, garlic, pasta sauce, sugar and basil and then simmer for about 20 minutes.
    3. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to the boil. Add pasta and cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until al dente and then drain. Combine the pasta and turkey mixture; toss and serve.

    We're trying to eat less red meat, so thought i'd try turkey mince, and this recipe converted us all! Really hearty and satisfying, you don't even really think about it being turkey. Will make again, thanks!  -  11 Dec 2012

    Delicious! Pretty quick, too. Of course, I ended up making a few changes, but the basics are the same. Rather than a can of stewed tomatoes, I used a can of diced, seasoned with basil, garlic, and oregano. Doubled the tomato sauce because I just wanted to use the whole can. I'm glad I did, because even with the extra tomato sauce I couldn't use all of the pasta I cooked, it would have been too dry. I guess I used about 2/3 of the 16 oz box that I cooked. No big deal there. I also cooked chopped onion with the turkey. As the sauce cooked, I sprinkled all kinds of spices in...it was a bit bland for our tastes without it. I added seasoned salt, paprika, red pepper, italian seasoning, extra basil, and a bunch of chili powder. So, so good, I've been thinking about the leftovers all evening.
