Egg free, dairy free and nut free chocolate cake

    This chocolate cake is your go-to recipe for those with food allergies, but it is sure to be enjoyed by all. Be sure to read the label on your cocoa powder and chocolate chips to ensure they're fully free of any allergens. You can also use chopped plain chocolate with a high percentage of cacao. Be sure to use 100% cocoa powder, and not a drinking chocolate mix.

    Serves: 8 

    • 200g plain flour
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 200g caster sugar
    • 4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
    • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
    • 5 tablespoons vegetable oil
    • 1 tablespoon vinegar
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 225ml cold water
    • 85g plain chocolate chips

    1. Preheat oven to 180 C / Gas 4. Grease a 20cm square cake tin.
    2. In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, sugar, cocoa and bicarbonate of soda. Mix well with a fork, then stir in oil, vinegar and vanilla extract. When dry ingredients are thoroughly moistened, pour in cold water and stir until cake mixture is smooth. Stir in chocolate chips and pour mixture into prepared tin.
    3. Bake in preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes, until a skewer inserted in centre comes out clean. Cool on a rack.


    Do ensure by looking at the labels that all of your ingredients are allergen free and not made with any dairy, nut or egg ingredients or additives.

    Really easy recipe to follow and tasted great. I made it as cake not as muffins, as the photo indicates, and found it didnt stay together very well. I will try this again as muffins  -  01 Feb 2012


    Hi. What is the topping you have used in he picture? Is it fluff? Looks rather yummy It's my daughter first birthday next week and she's allergic to dairy so hunting for a recipe. The oil and vinegar did srprie me so hoping it works out  -  03 Jul 2012


    Really good recipe for a birthday or celebration because there aren't any allergens! Looks great in the oven. I sure it will taste great too! :D Only problem is that it doesn't seem to rise very much, not sure if that is my fault or just the recipe but otherwise great  -  06 Oct 2016
