    About this recipe: These little scone-like buns are sweet, warmly spiced and dotted with chopped dates and walnuts. Enjoy with a cup of tea or coffee.

    Makes: 36 

    • 300g caster sugar
    • 115g butter
    • 3 eggs
    • 300g sifted plain flour
    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
    • 1 teaspoon hot water
    • 300g dates, pitted and chopped
    • 350g chopped walnuts

    1. Preheat oven to 180 C / Gas 4.
    2. In a medium bowl, cream the butter and sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each. Dissolve the bicarbonate of soda in the hot water, add it to the egg mixture. Stir in the flour and cinnamon until well blended. Finally, stir in the dates and walnuts so they are evenly distributed.
    3. Drop heaped spoons of the batter onto an ungreased baking tray. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes in the preheated oven, until golden.
