Cheesy sausage on rye

    These are the perfect party nibbles. Small pieces of rye bread are topped with a mixture of sausagemeat and cheese sauce. They are a guaranteed crowd pleaser.

    Serves: 10 

    • 450g pork sausagemeat
    • 3 tablespoons finely chopped onion
    • 1/2 teaspoon garlic granules
    • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
    • 250ml ready-made cheese sauce
    • 450g German rye bread, cut into 4cm squares

    1. In a large frying pan, cook sausagemeat over a medium heat until it is browned and cooked through. Stir onion, garlic granules, black pepper and cheese sauce into the frying pan. Stir until the cheese is melted and the ingredients are well combined.
    2. Spread 1 tablespoon of mixture onto each slice bread and serve warm.

    I haven't heard of Hanky Pankies in years! I make mine with one pound ground beef, one pound sausage, Velveeta cheese, various spices, then spread on rye cocktail bread.     I make these and then put on a cookie sheet to freeze, then transfer to freezer bag. Pop in the toaster oven to heat (350 for about 15 minutes). Makes a good am or afternoon snack.     This recipe is a keeper! My family loves these, they make a great appetizer. When making them, I use equal parts of lean ground beef and sausage. My family prefers the meat mixture over using just sausage.  -  14 Feb 2002  (Review from Allrecipes US | Canada)
