Chocolate walnut traybake treats

    Layers of sweet yum begin with a digestive biscuit base followed by rich and creamy sweetened condensed milk, chocolate chips, coconut and walnuts. Gorgeous sweet treat for elevenses or for some half term cooking fun in the kitchen with the kids.

    Serves: 96 

    • 450g melted butter
    • 500g digestive biscuit crumbs
    • 1 (397g) tin sweetened condensed milk
    • 500g plain chocolate chips
    • 275g desiccated coconut
    • 300g chopped walnuts

    Prep:15min  ›  Cook:30min  ›  Ready in:45min 

    1. Preheat oven to 180 C / Gas 4.
    2. Combine the digestive biscuit crumbs and melted butter, mix well and press mixture into the bottom of one 20x30cm tin. Pour the sweetened condensed milk over the base. Layer the chocolate chips, coconut and nuts on top. Press down gently into the "goo".
    3. Bake at 180 C / Gas 4 for 25 to 30 minutes or until lightly brown. Let cool completely before cutting into 5x5cm squares.

    I've been making these for years...They are much better when you layer as follows: melted butter, sprinkle crushed crackers next, chocolate chips, walnuts, coconut & save the sweetened milk for Last.     The came out terrible. Even the guys at work did not eat them. There was no balance between the ingredients - too much crust, not enough chocolate. Parts were so hard they ended up going out to the birds. I was very careful in following the recipe, since this was the first time I had made them.
