About this recipe: A spicy soup made with steak and Scotch bonnet chillies for a kick. Serve with boiled sweet potatoes or yams for a South African accompaniment.


Serves: 8 

  • 2 tablespoons groundnut oil
  • 450g (1 lb) stewing steak or chicken, washed and diced
  • 2 red onions, chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground root ginger
  • 3 Scotch bonnet chillies, seeded and finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, diced
  • 100g (4 oz) okra, diced
  • 500ml water

  1. Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add meat, onion, garlic and ginger. Fry until meat is lightly browned and onion soft. Add the remaining ingredients.
  2. Bring to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 25 minutes. Serve with gari or boiled yam.
