About this recipe: This is perhaps the most decadent trifle recipe in existence! It's quite versatile, and if you are pressed for time you can use shop-bought chocolate cake or brownies. Add your own variations, such as fresh fruit or a sprinkling of your favourite liqueur.

sweettooth Cheshire, England, UK

Serves: 12

  • 1 recipe chocolate brownies
  • 500g mascarpone cheese, room temperature
  • 150g plain chocolate, melted
  • 350ml whipping cream, whipped
  • 30g plain chocolate, grated
  • Optional additions
  • raspberries, blackberries, cherries or strawberries
  • Grand Marnier, Kahlua, amaretto or rum
  • crushed Amaretti biscuits

Prep:45min  ›  Extra time:3hr chilling  ›  Ready in:3hr45min

  1. First, prepare the brownies according to the recipe instructions, and allow them to cool. Once cool, break the brownies apart into approximately 5cm pieces. (You can prepare the brownies a day in advance, or use shop-bought.)
  2. To make the chocolate mascarpone, first melt the chocolate in the microwave or in a double boiler. Beat together the mascarpone and cooled melted chocolate.
  3. In a trifle bowl or glass serving dish, place half of the brownies, half of the chocolate mascarpone and half of the whipped cream. Repeat layers. Grate chocolate onto top layer for garnish. Refrigerate for a few hours before serving for best results.

If adding liqueur, sprinkle this over the brownie layer. If adding fresh fruit or crushed biscuits, sprinkle over the cream layer.

This is one of my most requested desserts. I've had it on my Christmas and Easter menu since I first found it on here a few years ago. I add cherries in kitsch to mine to make it slightly more adult but works equally as well without. - 23 Dec 2014
