Beautiful spicy beef burgers

    1 hour 15 min

You just can't beat a home-made burger! I first made these last year when I couldn't get burgers in the shops and now I get asked to make them for every BBQ we have. They're cheaper and healthier than burgers in the shops. They're pretty versatile and you can alter the amount of herbs and seasoning to suit your taste.

    Makes: 6 medium sized burgers

    • 300g good quality lean beef mince
    • 1 slice white or brown (slightly stale is best) bread - grated into crumbs
    • 1/2 green pepper, minced
    • 1/2 large white onion, minced
    • 1 large garlic clove, grated
    • 1 red chilli, minced
    • 1 teaspoon salt and pepper, or to taste
    • 1 medium egg

    1. Place minced beef in a large bowl or food processor and loosen up with your hands or a spoon.
    2. Add breadcrumbs, pepper, onion, garlic and chilli, salt and pepper and mix until well combined. Add the egg and mix further. If dry, add a teaspoon of vegetable or olive oil.
    3. Take a small handful of the mixture and shape into discs about 2cm thick.
    4. Place burgers onto greaseproof paper on a baking tray and cover with another sheet of greaseproof paper.
    5. Chill in the fridge for at least half an hour before cooking on the BBQ. They take about 25 minutes and require turning a few times.

If you feel adventurous, add another chilli for more of a kick!
