Low Sugar Banana Chocolate Chip Cookies

About this recipe: These chocolate chip cookies get natural sweetness from the banana, and just a little bit of sugar to help them along. You'll notice these are a little more cake-like than typical chocolate chip cookies, but they're a healthful alternative and still delicious!


Makes: 36 cookies

  • 125g plain flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon bicarb of soda
  • 150g unsalted softened butter or margarine
  • 6 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 small ripe banana, mashed
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 175g dark chocolate, chopped
  • 60g chopped walnuts (optional)

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 C / Gas 4. Line a baking tray with parchment.
  2. Mix together the flour, baking powder, salt and bicarb.
  3. Cream together the butter and sugar until light. Beat in the egg, banana and vanilla.
  4. Combine the wet and dry mixtures. Fold in the chopped chocolate and walnuts, if using.
  5. Drop by spoonfuls onto the prepared tray, about 4cm apart. Bake for 10 minutes, or until lightly browned at the edges. Cool on wire racks and store in an airtight container, or freeze.

I did like these however I was surprised how they turned out. They are more like mini cakes, which us great just not what I was expecting. Lovely with a cuppa though, thank you - 06 Nov 2013
