About this recipe: Make ahead in the slow cooker, then sit down to a very tender and flavourful beef stew that the whole family will enjoy. Good with mashed potatoes or crusty bread.


Serves: 6 

  • 1kg beef or braising steak, cut into strips
  • garlic powder to taste
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 beef stock cube
  • 60 to 100ml hot water
  • 1 tablespoon cornflour
  • 1/2 onion, chopped
  • 2 large peppers, sliced
  • 1 (400g) tin tomatoes, with liquid
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt

  1. Sprinkle strips of sirloin with garlic powder to taste. In a large frying pan over medium heat, heat the vegetable oil and brown the beef. Transfer to a slow cooker.
  2. Mix stock cube with hot water until dissolved, then mix in cornflour until dissolved. Pour into the slow cooker with meat. Stir in onion, sliced peppers, stewed tomatoes, soy sauce, sugar and salt.
  3. Cover and cook on High for 3 to 4 hours, or on Low for 6 to 8 hours.

loved it! Did it for dinner party and everyone raved about it. Our friends went home wanting a slow cooker! I added loads of extra veggies with and extra oxo (for more liquid) and used passata instead of tomatoes. Served with fresh crusty bread buns, it was a total hit. Thank you! - 17 Jun 2012


tried this as my first go at using my slow cooker,doubled up on ingredients except the beef(6.5 LITRE SLOW COOKER) and added extra veg, a leek and some potatoes and used a whole onion.well pleased with the results, served it with a crusty french stick , family loved it . - 08 Jan 2015


Really did not like this. Not sure if i did something wrong, but it tasted really strange and even the smell of it cooking was unappealing. - 26 Sep 2011
