Sloe gin

    This is a wonderfully simple recipe for hedgerow alcohol made with sloe (blackthorn) berries. A winter warming treat!

    Makes: 2 Liters

    • about 1kg (2 or more lbs) sloes
    • 225g to 450g (1/2lb - 1lb) sugar
    • as required water
    • 1 large bottle of medium quality gin
    • You will also need
    • 2 large kilner jars
    • assorted bottles

    1. Wash the sloes and divide them evenly between the kilner jars, filling to around half way.
    2. Warm a pan of water and add the sugar; heat until all of the sugar is melted. You need enough of the sugar water to top up the jars.
    3. Pour enough gin into the jars to cover the sloes completely.
    4. Top up the jars with the sugar water and immediately seal. Give the jar a good shake to mix everything up.
    5. Put in a cool dark place, like the back of a cupboard and leave for 3-9 months. The longer you leave it the better it will be.
    6. Strain the jars into bottles. Seal or serve!


    Don't bother to buy expensive gin, it won't benefit the recipe so save your money. Although you can drink it from 3 months onwards, the longer you leave it the better.
