About this recipe: A very simple apple cake that can easily be modified in almost any way. Add a couple of tablespoons of cocoa, substitute the apples with chunks of chocolate and hazel nuts, and you have a lovely, soft chocolate cake with a bit of bite.

Makes: 1 loaf

  • 100g butter
  • 150g caster sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 100g buttermilk or yoghurt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 200g flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2-3 apples, depending on size

Prep:15min  ›  Cook:50min  ›  Ready in:1hr5min 

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 C / Gas 4.
  2. Melt butter. Whisk eggs and sugar until foamy.
  3. Blend wet ingredients, then stir in dry.
  4. Peel and slice apples.
  5. Pour cake mix in a regular loaf pan, or suitable cake pan. Stuff in as many pieces of apple as you can manage.
  6. Bake for about 50 minutes, let cool and enjoy!

I just made this for my husband and son, and we all absolutely loved it! I only had Lurpak and low fat yoghurt in the fridge but it came out delicious and extremely soft. I used a loaf tin and only cooked it for 40 minutes and did sprinkle caster sugar on the top before baking. Would go great with custard! Yummy, thank you! - 23 Jul 2013


I added a lot of spices as I thought this would be rather plain otherwise. It's a nice, moist cake. Here's my interpretation - 14 Apr 2014


Easy recipe and the cake is very yummy. My whole family love it. I used low fat natural Greek yogurt and sprinkled demerara sugar on top of the cake 😀 - 15 Sep 2015
