About this recipe: Easy for beginners. Traditional wheaten soda bread uses just a few ingredients, and is simple to shape and bake.

  • 250g self-raising soda bread flour
  • 150g medium wholemeal lour
  • Pinch salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
  • 275ml buttermilk

  1. Preheat the oven to 200 C / Gas 6.
  2. Mix the flours, salt and bicarbonate of soda into a bowl.
  3. Make a well in the centre and add the buttermilk.
  4. Mix to a loose dough and knead well for approximately 5 minutes until smooth.
  5. Shape the dough into a circular shape and make a cross-cut on the surface. Place onto a floured baking tray.
  6. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes. Cool on a wire rack.

Serving suggestion

When cool cut into slices and butter. Also lovely toasted with butter and jam. Please try and enjoy . . .
