The best ever toad in the hole
This toad in the hole has the lightest, fluffy, but filling batter ever. Good hearty winter favourite I cook for my family.
Ingredients
Serves: 4
- vegetable oil, as needed for cooking
- 110g (4 oz) plain flour
- pinch salt
- 3 eggs
- 300ml (1/2 pint) semi skimmed milk
- 4 to 6 pork sausages

- Preheat oven to 230 C / Gas 7.
- Into a medium sized deep baking dish, pour in the oil to a depth of about a 1/2 inch and place in the oven until hot.
- Mix the flour, salt, eggs and milk together and let rest for 10 minutes.
- In a frying pan over a medium heat, cook the sausages so they are brown all over.
- Remove the dish from the oven then add the sausages. Pour over the batter mixture.
- Bake in the oven for 20 minutes until batter has risen and turned golden brown.
Serving suggestion
Serve with mash potato, vegetables and gravy.

Bloody hell the oil over flowed into oven and oven smoked the whole house out! Then bottom of oven caught fire! We had to open all doors and kitchen windows. This TOAD in HELL looks good, but god only knows what it will taste like. I think you need less oil!!!!!! - 03 Dec 2012
I have to wonder if your first reviewer put half an inch of oil in his pan rather than used a pan that was half an inch deep?? Hee, hee, hee, no wonder the oven caught fire! I made this, it was fine, I just put a large glug of oil in my baking pan. - 23 Mar 2014
cut back an egg and the oil turned out fantastic will def use again - 02 Sep 2013
