About this recipe: For years I used custard powder... but one day I tried to make custard myself. It's really easy to make and with this recipe, no lumps and no worries!

    Serves: 4

    • 500ml milk
    • 1/2 vanilla pod, cut in half lengthways
    • 160g caster sugar
    • 4 eggs
    • 4 tablespoons plain flour

    Prep:5min  ›  Cook:10min  ›  Ready in:15min

    1. Combine milk and vanilla pod in a medium saucepan and bring to the boil over medium heat.
    2. Meanwhile, beat sugar with eggs in a bowl until mixture is creamy and a very pale yellow colour. Stir in flour; remove vanilla pod from saucepan and gradually add boiling milk to egg mixture, mixing well.
    3. Pour mixture into saucepan and cook over very low heat, stirring occasionally, until custard is thickened and ready.

Just made this custard it was so easy and absolutely stunning. I used vanilla extract instead of the vanilla pod. Will be making this custard again soon. Yum!  -  03 Oct 2014

Was so easy to make and very satisfying. The taste is so much better than shop bought custard. Never known the family look so blissed by one of my desserts before! Served this over apple and plum crumble.  -  27 Apr 2013
