Place the beans in a large pot, cover with warm water (there should be twice as much water as beans). Leave to soak for 24 hours.
Next day, pour in more water if necessary, add spices and herbs and simmer for 50 minutes.
Heat the oil over a medium high heat then add the onion and garlic and cook and stir until soft. Stir in the sausage and bacon and cook for few minutes. Add to the pot with beans, simmer for another 10 minutes. Stir in tomato purée, season to taste then bring to the boil and cook for a few more minutes. Remove from the heat (remove the allspice berries) and serve.
