About this recipe: Your family will beg for this easy dish over and over again. Turn au gratin potatoes into a meal with the addition of beef mince. Leftover roast beef also works well!

Serves: 4

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 400g beef mince
  • 2 tablespoons spice mix of your choice
  • 2 potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 100ml double cream
  • 100g grated Gruyère or Comté cheese

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 C / Gas 4.
  2. Heat the olive oil in a frying pan over medium heat, and cook and stir the onions until softened, about 10 minutes.
  3. Stir in the beef, and crumble with a fork so that it cooks evenly. Stir in the spice mix, and cook the beef until browned, about 10 minutes.
  4. Divide the beef into 4 individual baking dishes, and arrange the potato slices, like rose petals, over the top of the mince. Pour in the cream, then sprinkle evenly with the grated cheese.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven until the potatoes are tender, about 20 minutes. Remove from the oven.
  6. Preheat the grill, then pass the dishes under the grill until the cheese is browned, about 5 minutes. Remove carefully because they will be hot!

I make my own spice mix of Cayenne pepper, thyme and sage, but you can use any combination you like!
