Cheese and smoky bacon rolls

    An cheese and smoky bacon savoury treat for any occasion. Great with dinner, with a salad or for a snack.

    Makes: 18 rolls

    • 150g smoked bacon, cooked and chopped
    • 350g plain or wholemeal flour
    • 2 teaspoons baking powder
    • 250g grated cheese
    • 75g unsalted butter, softened
    • 1 teaspoon herbes de Provence
    • 1 clove garlic, minced
    • 1/2 teaspoon black cumin seeds
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 250ml milk
    • breadcrumbs for coating

    1. Preheat the oven to 200 C / Gas 6. Line a baking tray with baking parchment.
    2. In a large bowl, combine bacon, flour, baking powder, cheese, butter, garlic and spices. Pour in milk and mix well. Knead until smooth. If the dough is too sticky, add more flour.
    3. Shape the dough into small balls and coat with breadcrumbs. Flatten gently and place on the baking tray.
    4. Bake for 15 minutes until risen and golden brown.


    Black cumin seeds, also known as 'Nigella sativa', may not be readily available, so look for it on the internet or in speciality shops. In Indian shops it may be found as 'kaljeera' or 'kalonji'. In a pinch, feel free to omit.
