About this recipe: This simple French classic, meaning 'four fourths' is similar to a pound cake. Just combine all ingredients, mix well and pop into the oven - it couldn't be easier!


Serves: 6 

  • 4 eggs
  • 220g plain flour
  • 220g caster sugar
  • 220g butter, melted
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 pinch salt

  1. Preheat oven to 200 C / Gas 6 and butter a 23cm round cake tin.
  2. Combine all ingredients in a mixer and mix thoroughly (or manually with a spoon if you prefer).
  3. Pour into prepared tin and bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes; reduce temperature to 150 C / Gas 2 and bake for another 15 minutes, or until a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean.
