About this recipe:Having always heard of sloppy joes from TV Shows or films from the United States, I have never had the opportunity to try them. I recently was given a recipe from a friend in the states and I've tried them out. It's a simple recipe and is a delicious treat for everyone. I'll try to get photos on here soon.
First stick your sauté pan or wok into the fridge for about two hours. This is essential to the recipe as the meat needs to be cooked in a cold pan, colder the better.
The reason why you just chilled the pan is about to become clear. What you want to do is add the mince and the onions to the pan, don't oil it. On a medium heat you want to keep stirring and mashing the meat until it gains a sort of crumbly texture. This is called complete crumbleisation. Yeah I wasn't sure at first either but it works.
Once the meat is cooked and crumbled down into small pieces then you want to add the garlic and the diced green pepper. Sauté that for a few minutes then add half of the water.
Stir and then add the ketchup, sugar, salt and pepper. Stir it in and add the remaining water. Add cayenne pepper to taste. Bring it to a simmer and leave it for roughly 45 to 50 minutes until the water has evaporated and you are left with a lovely paste mixed in with the meat. It should not be too liquid as you don't want to have the roll fall apart but you don't want it dry.
Spoon the mixture on to the rolls, use whatever thickness of filling you want, and serve.
