    About this recipe: Impressive looking steak and ale pies that are easy to make in the slow cooker. You need individual pie dishes for best results or one large one will do. For your ale, try John Smiths, Guinness or Tetleys.

    Serves: 6 

    • 1kg cubed beef steak
    • 2 onions, chopped
    • 100g button mushrooms, chopped
    • 1 can ale
    • 6 tablespoons gravy granules
    • 1 to 2 sheets ready rolled puff pastry

    1. Fry off the steak till browned. Add to a slow cooker with the onion and mushroom. Make up the gravy thickly; add to the slow cooker. Add the ale, then cook on high for 4 hours or slow for 8.
    2. When the mixture is almost ready, cut the pastry to fit the tops of the individual pie dishes. Place on a tray and cook in the oven as the instructions advise, until golden and puffed. Usually around 20 minutes.
    3. Add beef mixture to the pie dishes, then the cooked pastry on the top. Serve with chips or mash and veg. Beautiful.

    Make ahead

    The pie mixture can be made ahead and frozen. Defrost when needed and pop the pastry in the oven for a quick pie on a busy night.
