Mary's mulled wine

    There's nothing more welcoming than a glass of hot spiced mulled wine when you have guests at Christmas!

    Serves: 10 

    • 3 tablespoons sugar
    • 600ml (1 pint) hot water
    • zest and juice of 1 orange
    • zest and juice of 1 lemon
    • 1 cinnamon stick or pinch of cinnamon powder
    • 3 or 4 cloves
    • 1 pinch nutmeg
    • 3 (750ml) bottles red wine

    1. Add sugar and hot water to large pot. Dissolve sugar over low heat.
    2. Mix together zest and juice of orange and lemon, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. Add to water solution.
    3. Add wine and heat until it is nearly boiling. Reduce heat and simmer for 30 mins on low heat. Ladle into glasses and serve with lemon slices.
