About this recipe: Chilli is the perfect food for students: cheap, tastes even better the next day and you can warm it up quickly if a bunch of friends show up uninvited!


Serves: 6 

  • 1 or 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion, minced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 500g beef mince
  • 500g pork mince
  • 2 (400g) tins chopped tomatoes
  • 1 small tin tomato puree
  • 1 (400g) tin kidney beans, drained
  • cayenne pepper to taste
  • 2 or 3 pickled hot peppers, minced
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • chilli powder to taste

  1. Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and garlic, stir for a few minutes to soften. Add minced beef and pork; brown the meat, breaking it down with a spoon while frying.
  2. Add tomatoes, tomato puree, kidney beans, cayenne pepper and minced pickled peppers; bring to the boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 1 1/2 to 3 hours - the longer the better. Stir occasionally. Season with salt, pepper and chilli powder to taste before serving.
