Place the flour in a bowl and rub in margarine until it resembles breadcrumbs. Add 3 tablespoons water and mix to form a firm dough. Turn onto a floured board and knead lightly. Roll out pastry to make a 38cm (15 in) square.
Spread the apples evenly on the pastry, leaving a 2.5cm boarder all the way around. Spread the almonds and dates over the apples; sprinkle on the raisins, sugar and cinnamon.
Brush the edges of the pastry with water. Fold the borders on two opposite sides and roll up in a Swiss roll fashion. Wrap loosely in foil and place on a baking tray.
Bake in the centre of the preheated oven for 1 hour. Open the foil to expose the roll and cook an additional 20 minutes. Lift out of the foil, cool and sprinkle with icing sugar.
