South African beef bobotie

    Bobotie is a spicy beef mince dish that's sweetened with mango chutney and sultanas and topped with a creamy curried custard. Once you try it - you'll love it!

    Ingredients
    Serves: 4 

    • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
    • 450g lean beef mince
    • 1 onion, chopped
    • 1 large carrot, grated
    • 2 tablespoons mango chutney, or to taste
    • 2 tablespoons sultanas
    • 150ml milk
    • 2 eggs
    • 1 teaspoon curry powder, or to taste
    • 2 teaspoons turmeric, or to taste
    • salt and pepper, to taste

    Method

    1. Preheat oven to 180 C / Gas 4; lightly grease a deep baking dish.
    2. Heat oil in a large frying pan over medium heat; add beef mince in batches and cook until browned. Stir in onion and carrots and cook until softened.
    3. Season mince with salt and pepper; stir in mango chutney and sultanas and transfer into prepared baking dish.
    4. Whisk milk, eggs, curry powder and turmeric together in a bowl; season with salt and pepper to taste and pour on top of mince layer.
    5. Bake bobotie in preheated oven for 30 minutes or until golden brown on top.
