About this recipe: I remember my mum making these traditional (now referred to as retro!) fruit buns every now and then. After making them again recently, I felt her recipe deserved to be shared!

Makes: 1 dozen

  • 225g (8 oz) self-raising flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 110g (4 oz) soft margarine
  • 55g (2 oz) sugar
  • 110g (4 oz) mixed dried fruit
  • 55g (2 oz) currants
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • Demerara sugar, for sprinkling

  1. Preheat the oven to 200 C / Gas mark 6. Lightly grease two baking trays.
  2. Place the flour and baking powder in a large bowl; add the margarine and rub in with fingertips until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in sugar and fruit; add the egg and 1 tablespoon milk and mix to a stiff dough. If dry, add a little more milk.
  3. Using 2 teaspoons, shape the mixture into about 12 rough mounds; place on prepared baking sheets. Sprinkle with demerara sugar.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven until pale golden brown at the edges, about 15 minutes. Cool on a wire rack.
