Preheat the oven to 200 C / Gas mark 6. Lightly grease or line a baking tray with baking paper.
Sift flour and mixed spice together; rub butter into flour with fingertips until is resembles breadcrumbs. Add sugar, fruit and mixed peel. Mix in egg and enough milk to form a stiff dough. Drop spoonfuls on to the prepared tin.
Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, about 10 to 15 minutes. Cook on a wire rack.
