About this recipe: An easy recipe for a great beef casserole. The beef is cooked slowly in a tasty tomato sauce. It takes over two hours to cook, but is worth every minute of the wait.

Serves: 4 

  • 450g (1 lb) beef steak, diced
  • 3 tablespoons plain flour
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons tomato purée
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard powder
  • 600ml (1 pt) cold water

  1. Roll the beef steak in the flour until well coated.
  2. In a large casserole dish, heat the oil over a high heat, then quickly brown the diced beef for 1 minute to seal. Reduce the heat to medium.
  3. Combine the purée, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, salt, sugar, mustard and cold water. Pour into the casserole dish with the beef.
  4. Cover and simmer on the hob for 2 1/2 to 3 hours, until the beef is very tender and flakes with a fork.


This recipe calls for beef steak. Braising and casserole steak work great in this recipe.
