225g butter, softened
300g caster sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
250g plain flour
55g cocoa powder
3/4 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
325g semisweet chocolate chips
60g chopped walnuts (optional)

Preheat the oven to 180 C / Gas 4.
Beat butter, sugar, eggs and vanilla in a large bowl until light and fluffy. Combine flour, cocoa, bicarb and salt in a small bowl; stir into butter mixture until well blended. Mix in chocolate chips and walnuts. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto ungreased baking trays.
Bake in the preheated oven until just set, 8 to 10 minutes. Cool slightly on the baking trays before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
