Jackie's French onion soup

    Quick and easy, this French onion soup is basic, but oh-so delicious. You don't need to have much on hand to make this cheap and warming soup.

    Serves: 4 

    • 350g Spanish onions, thinly sliced
    • 1 pinch celery salt and pepper
    • 475ml beef stock (using 4 stock cubes)
    • 1 teaspoon Worcester sauce
    • bread
    • grated cheese

    Prep:10min  ›  Cook:25min  ›  Ready in:35min 

    1. Combine all ingredients except bread and cheese in a large saucepan, cover and bring to the boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes or until onions are soft.
    2. Cover sliced bread with grated cheese and grill until golden and bubbly.
    3. Divide soup equally between 4 large soup bowls and top each with a slice of toasted cheese.

    Tasty but rather strong. Think that 4 stock cubes are too much. Next time will use less and perhaps a little more water.  -  22 Sep 2013


    We really like this. Added a bit more water but otherwise good. I did tyry it with a bit of chilly in but it killed the taste.  -  11 Dec 2017


    really liked it. liked how strong it is. i think it needs the cheese. i used ordinary s + p as i dont have celery salt and left out the worcester sauce as i dont have that either and just used grated cheddar without bread. making this again today, i think the beef stock must be very good for you  -  09 Nov 2015
