About this recipe: This spiced coffee cake is made with a cup of brewed coffee and nicely spiced with cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg.


Serves: 16 

  • 300g butter
  • 5 eggs
  • 250g caster sugar
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons vanilla sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 pinch freshly ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 150g ground almonds or nuts of choice
  • 300g plain flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 250ml strong brewed coffee
  • To decorate
  • chocolate icing
  • 2 tablespoons sliced almonds

  1. Pre-heat oven to 180 C / Gas 4. Grease a 25cm springform tin.
  2. Beat butter in a large bowl until fluffy. Add eggs, sugar and vanilla sugar, while still beating continuously. Stir in cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, cocoa powder and ground almonds.
  3. In a separate bowl sift flour and baking powder and mix well. Add the dry mixture to the wet mixture alternating with the brewed coffee. Transfer mixture into the prepared tin.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven for about 70 minutes until a skewer inserted in the centre of the cake comes out clean.
  5. Remove the cake from the tin and let cool.
  6. When the cake has cooled completely, spread the chocolate icing on top and garnish with sliced almonds.
